Using LightForce Laser Therapy On My Left Knee due to Complete Quad Tear & Post Surgical Repair

Laser Therapy of diseased and damaged tissue produces a suppression of nociceptors, an increase of stimulation threshold, and an increased release of tissue endorphins. The result is a decreased patient perception of pain. Zap Pain, Zap Knee Pain, Zap Shoulder Pain.
Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth
Photons of light from lasers penetrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cellular reproduction and growth. Laser light increases the energy available to the cells so that they can take on nutrients and get rid of waste products more quickly.
Improved Vascular Activity
Laser light significantly increases the formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue. This speeds the healing process, resulting in more rapid wound closure.
Increased Metabolic Activity
The energy from photons of laser light is captured by chemical complexes within cells resulting in activation of enzyme systems and increased energy delivered into cellular metabolic processes.
Trigger Points and Acupuncture Points
Laser therapy stimulates muscle trigger and acupuncture points without mechanical invasion to provide musculoskeletal pain relief.
Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation
Laser Therapy reduces the formation of scar tissue.
Improved Nerve Function
Slow recovery of nerve functions in damaged tissue results in numbness and impaired limbs. Laser therapy accelerates nerve cell regeneration.
Therapy laser photons have an effect on immune systems status through stimulation of immunoglobins and lymphocytes. Laser therapy energy is absorbed by chromophores (molecular enzymes) that react to laser light. The enzyme flavomono-nucleotide is activated and starts the production of ATP, which is the major carrier of cellular energy and the energy source for all chemical reactions in the cells.
Faster Wound Healing
Laser light stimulates fibroblast development. Fibroblasts produce collagen, which is predominant in wound healing in damaged tissue. Collagen is the essential protein required to replace old tissue or to repair tissue injuries. As a result, laser therapy is effective on open wounds and burns.
The Laser works by converting light into biochemical energy, resulting in normal cell function, which causes symptoms (PAIN) to disappear.The primary biological action of laser results from stimulation of cellular transport mechanisms in the mitochondria, cell membranes and epithelial tissues. This action causes the release of vasodilating chemicals, the stimulation of DNA and RNA (Building blocks)synthesis, an increase in enzyme production, an increase of superoxide dismutase activity, normalization of tissue pH, and increased ATP production. The increase of vasodilatation (blood supply) and improved microcirculation will increase the supply of cellular nutrition promoting tissue repair and remodeling (which means you heal faster). Significant reduction in edema (swelling) is also noted.
Why Power Matters!
The standard unit of energy is measured in joules. One joule equals one watt of power radiated for one second. A Frozen Shoulder is treated with ~6600 joules in 10 min using 11 watts of power. Suppose you also have a knee sprain/strain. This requires ~3600 joules for 6 min at 10 watts. If I increase the wattage, the length of the treatment time reduces, but the same amount of joules are delivered to the tissues.
Now suppose I used one of those lasers with ~3.5 watts of power. In order to treat that same shoulder it would take over 30 min to deliver the ~6600 joules needed. The knee would take over 17 min; ~47 min total. If your sessions don’t last this long, you aren’t getting the full treatment you could get. By increasing the power on our Laser which shortens the time, both shoulder and knee can be treated in less time than treating one body part using the lower wattage Laser. As you see, you get more bang for your buck, as well as deeper penetration.
While more power is better, there is a limit to the amount needed. Our research has led us to obtain the LightForce EXP. Not only does it provide a whopping 25 watts of power, it also comes with massage applicators which allow for deeper penetration of laser energy. More than 25 watts is unnecessary.
Longer wavelengths and higher power outputs result in a deeper penetration of tissues and higher dosage to the tissue as well. In turn, this produces improved and more consistent clinical outcomes. The vast majority of lasers that are in use within rehabilitation clinics today are the lesser powered 0.5W Class 3B lasers. To put it into perspective, if a tissue requires a therapeutic dose of 6000 joules for effective healing to occur, it would take a Class 4 laser approximately 5-8 minutes to administer this dosage, whereby a Class 3B laser would take well over 120 minutes to achieve the same effect. Deeper structures become increasingly more difficult for Class 3B lasers to reach and even some structures considered more superficial might also be difficult to reach depending on a patient’s body mass composition.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Laser therapy & Laser Massage Therapy is a non-invasive technique to help reduce pain and inflammation. Laser therapy can be safely used as an adjunct or replacement for pharmaceutical drugs. This pain relief treatment is FDA cleared and enables patients to have an alternative to drugs and surgery.
Laser and massage therapy treatments last between 5 and 10 minutes depending on the condition being treated. Laser therapy treatments must be administered directly to skin, as laser light cannot penetrate through layers of clothing. You will feel a soothing warmth as the therapy is administered.

I get questions about the 'Willow Curve.' Firstly note in their commercials they mention 'Temporary Pain Relief', they say nothing about fostering healing processes. The following discussion about 'Why Power Matters' which compares our Laser System to other professional grade Laser Systems with less power, should help you come to your own conclusions. You can only imagine how 'Power' consideration would apply to a 'home unit' like the Willow Curve. This is the M6 Laser: The M6 only goes up to 3.3 Watts of power. The M6 is sold as a robotic device which applies laser therapy independent of the practitioner. It can also be applied by a practitioner, however, there is no 'Massage Applicator' to add Soft Tissue Mobilization or to help the Laser energy penetrate more deeply into tissues. When applied via a robotic arm, only one side of the body part or joint (e.g., knee) can be treated unless the patient wants to roll over & try to align the part him/herself with the laser head (good luck with that).
The LightForce EXP: Goes up to 25 Watts. and has a 'Massage Applicator Ball.' Higher power, especially with the addition of the 'Massage Ball' allows for deeper penetration of Laser Energy. When someone actually applies the laser him/herself, the body part can be treated circumferentially around the entire joint/limb and the applicator simultaneously provides soft tissue mobilization and massage.

Photobiomodulation and how it helps

Trauma, whether via sustaining a direct injury or as a result of surgery causes a cascade of tissue responses resulting in inflammation. Damaged tissue has been shown to respond very well to laser therapy. At the cellular level, deep penetrating photons activate a biochemical cascade of events resulting in rapid cellular regeneration, normalization, and healing. Laser light energy is highly absorbed by the skin and other subcutaneous structures that are collectively called chromophores; therefore, penetration is key to making the therapy work.
What does the therapy feel like?
There is little or no sensation during treatment. You may feel a soothing warmth in the areas treated. There is no pain during application. Laser treatment is relaxing and some people even fall asleep. Your pain may temporarily worsen 12-24 hours after a treatment session. This is because the laser light starts the healing process. This type of pain is particularly likely to arise when the condition(s) are chronic in nature. It usually subsides after a few days but can, in rare cases, last longer. This is a normal reaction if it occurs, and will subside.
How long does the treatment take?
The typical course of treatment is 10-minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Acute conditions may be treated daily, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when treatments are received 2 to 3 times a week. Treatment plans are determined on an individual basis.
How many treatments does it take?
This depends upon nature and status of the condition being treated. For some acute conditions, 3 to 6 treatments may be sufficient. More chronic conditions may require 6-10+ sessions. Conditions such as severe arthritis may require ongoing periodic care to control pain.
How long before results are felt?
You may feel improvement in your condition (usually pain reduction) after the very first treatment. Not everyone responds to laser therapy and results cannot be guaranteed. Each treatment is cumulative and results are often felt after 2 to 4 sessions. Treatments can last from 3 to 10 minutes. The therapeutic effect continues to sooth and heal long after you leave our office.
Are the results long lasting?
Therapeutic Laser Therapy is about healing. It’s not about masking or covering up a condition. When you feel better from this therapy… it’s because you are better or getting better. Therefore results have been found to be quite long lasting. The best way to prevent exacerbation is to be careful while participating in daily tasks and assuming sustained postures/positions. Use good body mechanics and maintain good posture. This can be reviewed during your physical therapy sessions.
Can laser therapy be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment?
Yes, laser therapy is even more effective when combined with other forms of therapy, including ASTYM (Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization); soft tissue mobilization and other manual therapy procedures, electrotherapy, therapeutic exercise and following surgery.
Is it a cold laser treatment?
NO! Our laser is a Class-4 Deep Tissue Laser with much deeper penetrating power. No cold laser on the market today can come close to the fast-acting therapeutic effects of our Class-4 device. Chronic pain relief and hard-to-fix cases are our specialty.
Can laser therapy be used over medical implants or over metal?
Yes, laser therapy is a light treatment. No heating is involved with the surgical or metal implants. It can be used safely with no side effects. It is extremely effective for post-operative wound healing. Many hip and knee replacement patients see us for care.
Is it covered by medical insurance?
Some insurance covers the procedure, but very very few. Most patients who decide to receive the benefits of laser therapy are sick and tired of being in pain so they choose to seek this effective method of treatment on their own. Price is usually not a consideration when you have been suffering for so long.
