As an integral part of the Functional Movement Systems, the Y Balance Test is a thoroughly researched, yet easy way to test a person’s risk for injury as well as demonstrate functional symmetry. The Y Balance Test Protocol was developed through years of research in lower extremity injury prevention using the Star Excursion Balance Test.
“What makes the Y Balance Test unique is that it becomes a great test to identify if there is a problem in the system. Why would someone fail the lower quarter Y Balance Test? If a person is lacking ankle dorsiflexion, ankle stability or strength, knee range of motion, knee stability or strength, hip range of motion, hip stability, core mobility or shoulder mobility, all of these.
The Functional Movement Screen(FMS) is an innovative system used to evaluate movement pattern for clients or athletes. The beauty of the Functional Movement Screen is that a personal trainer, athletic trainer or strength and conditioning coach can learn the system and have a simple and quantifiable method of evaluating basic movement abilities. The FMS only requires the ability to observe basic movement patterns already familiar to the coach or trainer. The key to the Functional Movement Screen is that it consists of a series of simple tests with a simple grading system. The FMS allows a trainer or coach to begin the process of functional movement pattern assessment in individuals without recognized pathology. The FMS is not intended to diagnose orthopedic problems but rather to demonstrate limitations or asymmetries in healthy individuals with respect to basic movement patterns and eventually correlate them with outcomes
The SFMA (Selective Functional Movements Assessment) is the movement based diagnostic system, designed to clinically assess 7 fundamental movement patterns in those with known musculoskeletal pain. The assessment provides an efficient method to systematically find the cause of symptoms, not just the source, by logically breaking down dysfunctional patterns and diagnosing their root cause as either a mobility problem or a stability/motor control problem.
This systematic process allows clinicians to clearly match their intervention to the main problem of the patient. This model efficiently integrates the concepts of altered motor control, the neurodevelopmental perspective, and regional interdependence into musculoskeletal practice.
We now use this program with every player as a pre-test and evaluation tool before we even begin to train them. This individualizes our training as we can now focus more on improving weaknesses, imbalances and asymmetries in an effort to improve functional movement patterns. Not only that, it's an integral part of our program; rehabilitating injuries, decisions on return to play, and it's a test before training camp that tells us if has the player improved and if we should feel good about putting him on the field.”
